On 15 October 2023, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system came into force. ETA only affects nationals of countries, that do not require a visa for the UK. Nationals from all other countries will still need a Visa for travelling the UK. If a person intends to travel to the UK, the requirements to obtain a visa must be checked in advance. In case no visa is required, one must verify whether an ETA registration is necessary.

Nationals of countries, who do not require a visa to the UK must complete an ETA registration in due time before entering the UK. The ETA will give them the permission to travel to the UK. The application process must be made online via the UK ETA app or on GOV.UK.

The ETA is required for stays of up to 6 months for tourist / business / study trips or to visit family and friends. People who only transit the UK also need an ETA, as do people who are intending to stay up to 3 months (creative worker visa concession).

An ETA is not required for nationals of the UK or Ireland, or for people, who hold a visa, residence permit, work permit or a permit to study in the UK.

The dates from which the obligation to ETA applies is staggered by country:

  • From 15 November 2023 on: nationals of Qatar
  • From 22 February 2024 on: nationals of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and UAE

Other nationals, who do not require a visa for the UK (for example from USA, Switzerland and EU) do not need to apply for an ETA as for now. However, note that the UK will extend the ETA requirement to more countries at later dates.

So, if you are planning a trip to the UK, please check in advance whether you need to apply for an ETA.
